I knew it!! I knew this would happen!! I now have read the realization that the panicked, toilet-paper hoarding, meat counter emptying, grocery store ravaging mob has moved on from the meats and vegetables in the grocery store to buying up all the seeds. No seed is safe….online and in the store, they are like locusts of biblical proportions!! Hot Damn, I knew once the thought sank in about prolonged food shortages and other countries withholding exports, the old heads would strike!!
The original article entitled “Panic Buying Comes for the Seeds” in the New York Times paints a very humbling picture of the shortage of garden supplies, specifically seeds. They even talked about victory gardens. That made me stop in my tracks. I stumbled upon it by accident as I was hunting for seeds from a few online distributors and wondering why a lot of the common items are sold out. It was one of those moments where I had to put my phone down and talk myself down from panic mode for a moment. Yes, you read it right, a run on seeds. I had a feeling last week that this would happen. Those old heads are smart….they aren’t sitting back waiting for anyone to rescue them, they have rolled up their sleeves and began tilling and planting. Old heads strike again!!
Let’s think about this sensibly for a moment….the stores are anticipating the arrival of the usual amount of seed, seed is provided. Seed isn’t one of those things you can simply just make more of. Seed is grown, seed takes time. Farmers will always have first pick of all new seeds produced. I knew this was coming….too bad I don’t know some winning lottery numbers as well. Ugh 😑
I knew last fall when I was ripping out my garden for the green trash can of vegetation that I would have a garden this year. I placed my seed order over a month ago. I was so excited. I thought I would wait to see what pops up, then place another order, as I really wanted to grow some exotic varieties this year for fun. My whole goal changed a few weeks ago….I now shifted gears to grow practical foods, foods that I have success in the past with, foods that will go a very long way in my pantry after the growing season is done. And the blog….THIS blog, started a few days ago so that I could encourage anyone reading this to start a garden.
From the way I am rambling on, I clearly have some residual anxiety after reading that article but my whole point is this….START THAT GARDEN NOW!! Do it!! You don’t want to play catch up, you want to strike while the iron is HOT!! Earlier today I talked about wiggle room, that wiggle room has just gotten smaller by no fault of your own. I don’t know what the future holds, I don’t know what grocery stores will look like in a month….I never guessed they would be where they are now. But you can take some control of that risk by getting your garden plans up and running as soon as possible. Every single person is capable of being a gardener. Any one of you can watch YouTube and read up on things that suit your growing situation. Let’s be successful together 💜🌱💜. Let’s do this thing!!
