First Signs of Life

So by now, if you planted your seedlings and set up a nursery for them approximately three days ago, you are probably starting to see the first signs of life. This is a very good thing!! Your little baby pots are probably showing little lumps and bumps because the seedlings are soaking up that moisture and starting to grow.

I’ve now started some solo cups with seedlings. They are great as long as you poke holes in the bottom sides for drainage with a sharp and/or hot object.

A very tiny baby plant poking its way through the dirt.

Whatever you do at this point, DO NOT disturb the tops of the baby pots. Those little seedlings are delicate and need their space. The success of your adult plants rests solely on the babies setting up a good root system and starting to grow big and strong. The best thing you can do at this point is make sure the dirt stays moist and the covers stay on. Central heating, especially gas heat, will dry out baby pots fast. You don’t necessarily need a baby plant setup or even a cover as much as you need to keep the pots moist and away from cold drafts. A warm, sunny spot is ideal. Let them do their thing. There will be plenty of time to handle the plants once they get bigger. Besides, you should start planning where you are going to plant your garden and how much space you will have. You’ll also need to start getting the future garden space ready. But that’s another post.
